The dance itself has several variations and styles developed resulting from its adoption in many different cultures. The traditional Argentine Tango may be danced in a closed or an arm length embrace. The leader in essence walks the follower to the music while staying true to its emotion and speed. There is minimal lifting of the feet away from the ground and the ankles and knees brush each other as one leg passes the other. Though the dance like all others has certain patterns of movements, there is not fixed “basic step”; the only constant being that the follower is led with the alternate foot and almost never has her weight on both feet at the same time. Unlike other dances, the Tango is an act of communication between the partners in the moments that it is performed.
